OUT OF CONTEXT

Roman gladiators looking for a thumbs up. alternative artists unite in the streets.like a big billboard with "clear channel" written across its base.in just a matter of ,what 14 yrs, mainstream airwaves go from spewing things like i still haven't found what im looking for to some booger growling i hate everything about you, growl grumble heavy guitar etc... aren't billboards how ted turner got started? give the people what they want.keith haring subway art that just looked like it belonged there. Artlanta:united we stand. we stand united. like an 18x24 coroplast sign.45 for 99 signs this size. Chris, you know about the right of way law, i am sure.(your piece at MOCA pin up show was very nice, by the way) 10 feet back behind a telephone pole?4x4 posts and quickrete. MDO plywood.electrical and dimensional signs are totally diff. case.you get what i am saying, bottom line is,you and i have things at our fingertips daily. Robert, who has seen this same thing for how many years...20
something did you say? Cedric sounds like he is willing to DIE for this cause. ced...r u still living in atl, i forget? i might have you confused with someone else.
hope hope fingers crossed that i sound idealistic and maybe even a bit realistic with my own private funds. all i have to answer to is my own will.and my own belief in myself. laziness, too.!patience and application of a clear focused IDEA. artists in business will always be filling out applications for each and every job they do.You are only as good as your last job. and even that is soon forgotten due to the fact that the next assignment may be entirely different.thats thebeauty and joy and challenge of "art". they have to submit portfolios, not like a chemical engineer for instance, who gets his masters and piece of paper and gets an automatic increase in HIS/HER chance of someone's trust , being hired to do something and paid to do it.. will always be this way. i choose to not become bitter about the public or the government and its choice of funding or interests. especially when this country is by no stretch homogenous in its culture.
disregard them. come at them from a different route. the potential for ONE PERSON to do this is and always will be there. just who are they doing it for? hopefully first and foremost themselves. but it can gather momentum and a bandwagon and start the whole dang cycle over again. like small earthquakes instead of one big one that just builds and builds.
all of this of course has to do with the public. not gallery venues. and it presumes someone out there is for real. im not!atleast not yet. im learning at a pretty good rate, though. and my passion aint dying or crying..in fact its multiplying. hah! oh. i think a sculpture of Tupac in a suit has a better chance than one of sonny in,let's say, overalls.yee haw.slap the cat and spit on the fire.
who here is coming out to eyedrum saturday?

SO I CAN SEE MYSELF

My Dearest Wormwood,
Actually, i want more people like this on the list. Its an art list! this one's got passion.and the will to spill the contents of their mellon. just giving themselves away.we dont need to brand this one. he's/she's wearing it on his/her sleeve for us.
Hey hero...what you think of Howard Finster? I think Ed Gein by definition was a folk artist, don't you? wanna meet somewhere dark and secluded? bring yr paints.
Jesus was the ultimate artist, if you ask me. The way i see it, artists attempt to give something of themselves, right? they put their time and effort into it and try to communicate something they feel is worth being heard. Regardless of who will listen or notice , the message/piece is there for people to go to. What do most artists give of themselves? their time, money, maybe even some blood....but not usually their life. or getting the poop beaten out of them, not usually.what do they believe people are getting in return? eternal life? not usually. Im working on a painting that is kinda like the fountain of youth(it will work...i promise), but it sure aint gonna give eternal life.best i can do.sue me. dont think it will provoke crusades or anything either, but one can dream. Jesus was actually the first Conceptual Artist, now that i think about it. what an abstract idea! I freakin DIE so that all may live forever? Not me buddy. The most i can offer is wall decor. He snagged the dang
trump card of ideas. the bastard.
gotta give it to him. he was either a liar or a lune or he was what he says he was.
Instead of "Think about Honking if you like Conceptual Art"...think about dying. and think of yr family and loved ones. then throw in the grapevine, oral tradition,a bunch of time, and a healthy dose of Unavoidable Human Judgement and roll camera. I'd be motivated to spread the word given that.

by the way.. does anyone else here feel that part of the creative process has to do with flowing with it, allowing something to work with and through them and their initial motivation? I meet so many f-ers that say they can't finish something cuz it aint turnin out like they want or are afraid or whatever.

REVERSE ORDER

my apologies artnews subscribers.
Laura is correct. Her controlled slap to my face in the room has caused a reverb i am still reeling from. Her use of the word "vituperative" really drove it home for me.
My reaction to the initial quote felt a presumed negativity. that is what i responded to.
I thought i was being sassy in a positive way.But oh well...

and uh-oh. ignore my Ignorant Balls post, Laura. It wasn't wise.
Thank You for your response Laura.
Maybe we should get together and play Twister sometime.

Laura wrote:
Although it is often tempting to be vituperative in response to messages on this list, it is rarely wise to express such sentiments -- and really it is so unpleasant to have to read such a lack of control. In the future, please rant at home and leave the e-list alone. Thank you.

"Apathy and Centricism falls in a forest.. use their(your?) cold dead hand to get yourself off."
will you make a sound?

presuming They are trying to pry yr creativity out of yr hand...
aren't you "doing it for yourself" first and foremost anyways?
sorry...the quote was nice and all....i just thought i saw a pink bunny peep his wittle head up over my compooter and wiggle his wittle nose at me for a second there.you know..bigblue sky and happy clouds. crap like that. i vomit kandinsky in your general direction.

ANCIENT MEMORY

Went to English Avenue Yards last night. I wake up this morning realizing that they are The Enemy. Yes, I am supportive of anyone creating and yes i am supportive of anyone who has an interest in art. But, Good Lord...
Perhaps it is about context, timing and what you show and where and all that.. I am not sure. This is my personal "felt" truth. There Were good things there. I always enjoy what Duane Georges does. If he wants me to do him a favor and stay off his side, Tough Doo Doo Duane. I like your work. I really do.Anyways...The pathetic Quasi Hippy drum circle. What a sack of phony sugar. The Nagle lookin crud, the general appearance and design of the place. Something about it smacked of an association with an image. or an idea. One Loft looked like an entrance to a mall art store for God's sake.I don't give the place long. As real estate, sure, but as a respectable art venue....this type of place is representative of Atlanta's problem. The horse is always being put before the cart. I change my mind, maybe some sick bastard realized what this city is like and the architect at work here is the artist. Who cares what's inside? right? Maybe this place will find gnarly shallow roots in
Atlanta's top soil and spread like freakin kudzu.
There is a certain honesty that I believe can be sensed. Of course opinion and years of observing also factor in, but some things just don't cast a shadow. Places like this are exactly what our city does not need.It is dead weight. I am referring to the dread cry I hear of so many struggling artists. The general disappointment in The Scene. So many references to a preference for the feeling and interests people get in other cities. English Avenue Yards struck me as a location built with the same surface level whimsy of the words and ideas floating in the air over a frou frou outdoor tea party. There's a time and place for it, but G-Darn IT. Get The F Out of our City with it. Take it to Blue Ridge or Roswell, at the very least.. Or better yet, kill yourself. For now. Maybe later I will re-animate you. But for now F-Off. If you've got money and an idea...dam you, do yrself and us a favor and do some research. go to wal-mart and buy a soul before you start laying bricks.Ask a friend
of a friend with taste and a vested interest in our future what to do. you piece of shirt.
Again, I want to emphasize, there were good things there. But the context completely ruined it for those that did have good or even great work. It simply perpetuates the problem. (a five dollar cover???)Anything good was overshadowed by the laughable self serving look at me-ness of it all.
by the way. Look at me. My fingernails are bent back from clawing away.I am bleeding internally. I am from Atlanta and am thankful for Eyedrum. I went there after seeing this shite and felt like i had been given a blood transfusion. The Spelvin Collection was hilarious and great. The singer from Dairy Queen empire was beltin it out.The front corner room had a fascinating depth peception dilemma causing raw scratchy action piece installed. I even enjoyed its meaning as well as how it looked.
oh....God I despise Youngblood, but i would sooner lick their bathroom floor (do they have a bathroom?)than return to English Avenue Yards. Atleast Youngblood is honest . I am thankful for Nancy Solomon, for Brian Holcombe. For Chris Warner...sort of.
I'd like to go on record saying that my work belongs at English Avenue Yards. I suck. I am the enemy. But i know what this city needs and i am working and opening my mouth to hear myself.
so yes..rock on atlanta. go buy something and put it on yr wall.
Does anybody here remember that amazing blue bug eyed critter named Izzie or Whatizit? from the olympic days...who came up with that? classic flop if there ever was one. could here it splat on the ground in loganville.
how bout that be our slogan "Waar's At lanta?"
i am a local, ya'll. born and raised, ayep. my daddy was from a yankee family, michigan... and me mumma was from tucker. im 7th generation tucker on that side. there's a certain pride in that.perhaps that word is too strong. an interest at the very least. gives me a sense of honesty.Or something to be aware of.something i do love and have a comfort in, because of its familiarity and its ways.but im a split, see.got the yankee dad. some of my ways and pronunciations make even my own kind not even feel me. so i sense this clannish angering reticence to open up. to be totally genuine. im just being listened to and told what i want to hear. im being coaxed for info. we're smiling and all, yes.but it is so darn subtle and sweet.
ive noticed a kind of reclusiveness in certain corners of southern culture.it has to do with willingness to communicate as well as willingness(personally as well as , well, whatever else) to be an evident part of a culture, in terms of causing a visible thing to stereotype.or target. it would almost seem like we are no longer here. but believe me we are.i think it is evident in different ways.. drive down lawrenceville hwy in tucker and try to throw a rock without hitting a church. For me, that in itself is one of the more on the surface evident things. in living here all my life(except for 95-96 in new orleans) i still sometimes feel like no one is from here anymore. but i do stop and realize that, or believe that, every culture has its ways that are representative in others in other ways. it just takes a symbiotic synchronicity, a patience and a timing. Especially amongst strangers and co-workers. and i am still restricting this to specific aspects within a specific culture.it is
an invisible strain. but it feels good to communicate and feel understood.and feel a sense of family. I believe those attempting to brand atlanta have a challenge that only about 20 yrs will cure. southern secret society, for a fun silly name, is being dissolved. like sugar in tea that aint sweet enough...or is it. we will tell you we are gone. we promise. only a few more years and it'll be different. yep.
this here river dont go to aintry.
no man with a good car needs to be justified
so yeah, amy hoover, tony accurso, john padgett...right on. i like the one about the brand not "coming to him, it seems he has to go to it." very true. i reminds me of the dominance and submissiveness of any relationship. how hats are shared. sucks feeling like you are submitting control.having to be the one to ask.gotta stay on yr toes. Opening up, as it were. i wasn't to with Padgett's whole saccharin smile padded scoring perspective. "we should be proud of what we accomplished"attitude. What? that now we've now got some interesting, smart and capable people who are now figuring out that they should be willing to work together? what do you want? a medal? you learned how to walk or swim. congrats. my neice just learned how to walk a few months ago. should i invest in a freakin billboard now?
i realize i am doing an awful lot of personal projecting. it is presumptious. i do feel like i have observed some sort of commonality, though. it would seem we could steal Las vegas's slogan and it would work just as well for us.
oh and the song...It sucked.the end. If it did ANY polarizing, it was between those with and those without taste.
city of peace seems okay. peace is neat. id rather it, than gettin in a fight.but i'll rassle wich ya in mah backyard and wup tar outcha.if you gotta problem with it, that is.
im fixin to go now. so bye.peace.
anyone here remember Hee Haw? sheesh.

LIES.

It was the spring of 89 and i was in a van with two of the members of Love Tractor, Jeff Caulder and this woman that somebody said was in the Butthole Surfers. We had all done some acid and were driving up to see Pylon in Athens. They were discussing the goings ons when suddenly..Pow! A flat. we were in total darkness in that inbetween area of nuthing out there. and i was scared. i was a roadie type punk, but mostly i was there to walk their dogs. We had a bull mastiff, a chihuahua, and a yellow lab (with the runs) in this van with us. along with a bunch of equpiment. it kinda sucked. the guy driving was blaring a warbled warped version of an S.T.O.D album the whole way. Would not stop. He actually decided at one point to drive on on the flat and left us out there. but he did come back. in the interim, somebody wandered off into the field with the chihuahua and i honestly don't remember them coming back.
but anyways, i vaguely remember digging out a spare tire and putting it on for them while they did more drugs and blared more music. it echoed across the field. the stars were beautiful . i remember noticing the sign for cancer overhead and seeing a shooting star. made me think of that scene in Jaws where roy scheider has a star shoot over his head and then i became afraid a shark was gonna come out of the field, like in children of the corn, rolling land hump style, or saturdaynight live. but it didnt. they yelled at me because i zoned out, pretending i was chumming instead of screwing the tire back on.
so we get to Athens and it is daylight and we want breakfast. there's only me and one member of Love Tractor and somewhere along the way we had picked up a couple of infants. and im not talkin even walking. two infants are in the seat with us. i think the owner of the Mastiff had them. there was a woman there, right? and she's was weraing this torn Kinnetic Dissent shirt that revealed most of her chest. which in my state, all i remember is they(the two) seemed to be literally crawling with acne. Not unlike a swirling red constellation on a fleshy sea of tissue. i vomited right there in the rest ow! rant. then so did the infants.

i got left there with the check. i dunno what happened to the member of Love Tractor.
I think i saw him at Golden Pantry a few months ago when i went up there to see Tony Hawk at their new skate park.He had an amazingly full head of hair. he and i (tony)are friends. remember tony alvarez? he might know what happened to those guys. i sure don't.
I thought Christians view human life, the physical life, as innately evil.anything of this earth is of human desire. the soul is pure. original sin and all that. can only admit we are imperfect and in doing so, also accept that God sent Christ to forgive us of our sins. by accepting Him, physical body becomes motivated to strive for best it can do while it is here.which is supposed to be nothing relative to eternity.
i remember my brother becoming motivated to break all his ac/dc, adam ant, kenny rodgers and devo albums...secular music does not glorify God.
thats the tricky loop of it to me. technically, we are forgiven and going to heaven just by admitting Jesus was sent by God and acceping him in our heart as Lord and saviour....the rest is man made and really don't matter.
so i guess the two you refer to do coincide.even the practice of the religion itself and all its phases of change are man made.i might have left some amazing stuff out that i am sure somebody would be glad to fill in. just frustrates me that caring for others gets turned into judgement of others. i had to go to this christmas play of my grandmother's in snellville and the preacher stood up after the play and preached for a sec. it had been some time since i'd seen a preacher doin his thing. what was funny was it reminded me of artists i know. tryin to get their message across. tryin to reach people. passionate. meaning well. frustrated at being ignored and how blind people can be.but happy when they reach somebody.needing money but wanting to be "principled" about it. very persistant.
There's no chinking the armour of a Christian's loop of logic. they will right off anything they think misrepresents them, as of man, not of the message. not of God's will. hence the bumper sticker "im not perfect, just forgiven"
i think human nature, when it gets down to it acts on instinct..without judgement, actually. something that can be perceived as either good or evil depending on timing and vantage. BUT.. i do believe in a spirit and God, and it reveals itself to my through art sometimes. sometimes. the act of creation and all that. they say in portraits, babies are the hardest thing to do. hard to capture...i can see that. i can see it being explained biologically, but i'd like to believe it is cuz they are closer to some sort of purity.
i dunno...i did this free thing at young blood last night, right? why..i don't know.i work in signage. also,why... i don't know. i make paintings motivated by good intentions and show them in a way that i feel is personalized. i see others out there doin it. when they speak of their work, like this guy Jody I met, nice guy, but the whole time i am talking to him and he's realing off all these venues and the percentages they do and dont take,im thinking about his cute acrylic turtles and his replications of the Superman logos covered in Behr Polyeurathane.. meanwhile the walls are covered with Juxtapoz schtuff. Good stuff, but its the usual thing since the dawn of freakin time: Impressionism gets big, you get copy cats, ab-ex gets big...you get copy cats. gallery owners having to be brief with people, have this distance, having to show stuff that sells. The strangest thing though, was seeing this girl walk in, tall and lanky blond and very familiar looking. Im racking my brain,
right? where have i scene this person?? then i realized... a tv show (i watch tv sometimes) it's this girl from a sex change show on cable that i saw. I remember it was the girl that was having to figure out how not to be so touchy feely with her friends. wanted to say something to her to the effect of admiration for her balls, i mean...confidence., but she was gone when i came back inside. The end of men?
anyways...now im having a moral dilemma. this is relevant, guys. i promise. i think my work is a horrible insult to mankind.
Now i am thinking i want to do what i do to help others and do it for free. slow down. prify my actions by minimizing my desires. if i give a homeles person money, my intentions are good, what they do with it is their responsibility, right? yeah...whatever. I wanna make beautiful things... maybe i will join this place called Blood and Fire where my friend Rose works.rehabiltates less fortunates, helps them get on their feet. but i aint no christian. so to heck with that. maybe i do believe in the devil and it is the apocalypse. now. maybe this is the best i have to offer.Man.. people actually craned their necks AROUND my paintings to see the Juxtapoz on the wall behind it. they were groovy little detailed pieces, true. but, man. i am not gonna stop.it is a relative thing.
but i will stop this. sorry it wasn't full of multi syllabled words or references to derrida or some groovy book review or whatever. i think it is real. buthey iwill mention an art show i am doing. i will be at apache on monday with a piece i did using damar about cancer. the sign, not the disease. Michi freakin got my sign, Leo. da bastid. and im gonna go to a coffee shop next to Wuxtry in decatur tomorrow (saturday the 7th) and Ho myself out like the art Ho i is.also got paintings in Raging Burrito in decatur and have had them there since the mesozoic era.pleistocene? i dunno.hey... plagioclase feldspar. zygomycota. blood enters the heart through the superior and inferior vena cava and become distended in the oh rose thou art SICK! YOU INVISIBLE WORM, YOU.
so come on out. im broke. my paintings are great! they suck! its existential. its schroedenger's paint brush. stuck in my bottom hole.im freakin givin them away. tell your rich friend moving into Atlantic Station to swing on by.
i hate all of you.
love
EGGTOOTH
(actually, whether or not my paintings suck is subjective, cuz it is art. and you might not know this, but art is a subjective thing..) i dig em.
ok,well i guess it's off topic(??!)
